Double epicyclic automatic gearbox - has brake on input and lock on output of double bevel gear shafts

The gearbox comprises two concentric crown wheels (17,19) mounted on the input shaft (21) and two identical crown wheels (18,20) on the output shaft (22). The two pairs of crown wheels are coupled through four inner and four outer satellite bevel gears (13,14). The bevel gears rotate freely on the spindles (11) of a cruciform carrier which has a hub (12) rotating about the axis (14). The input crown wheel (17) has a lever operated brake (27,28) whilst the output crown wheel (18) is fitted with a stop (24,25) for preventing rotation. The mechanism can operate as a friction clutch or as an automatic gearbox.
