The appts. uses a range of transmitted frequencies each of which is shifted on reflection from a moving target into a different Doppler frequency. By studying the spectrum of shifted frequencies it is possible to determine without ambiguity the speed of the moving target. The associated spectrum analysing system uses words of 16 or 32 binary elements provided by a contrast detector at the output of the spectrum analyser. From this information a summary of the spectral information is derived. This then reduces the volume of calculation necessary in order to obtain the speed of the target. A contrast detector is included and receives a signal from a spectrum analyser formed of a number of points obtained from a weighting circuit.
