The starter has a control to vary the level of electrolyte in a first compartment. A dielectric fluid, e.g. air, is injected into a sealed second compartment connected to the first compartment and alters the level of electrolyte. The resistance of the electrolyte is therefore varied automatically and progressively by the injected air. The air is injected using a compressor driven by an electric motor. The electrolytes compartment contains two electrodes between which the resistance varies as the electrolyte level changes. Several such arrangements may be connted together and supplied from the same compressor. The starter can operate with up to 7kV between phases. The compressed air may be replaced by helium or by a suitable gas cylinder.
