The casing consists of a stack of metal rings held in place by an outer sheath. Each ring resembles a gear ring in that it has a circular row of teeth, the thickness of the ring at the roots of the teeth being small and forming zones of low strength where the rings fracture; the number of teeth corresponds with the number of shell splinters required. The teeth may be formed on the external or internal surface of each ring. In an alternative pref. design, a stack of rings with external teeth may be located in a meshing stack of rings with internal teeth. The sheath pref. consists of a metal tube; a polymer; or a resin which is possible reinforced with fibres. The rings have a low mfg. cost, and may be easily stamped out of metal sheet.
