Depilation of hide of animal carcasses esp. pigs - by spraying with jets of water at pressure between 20 and 300 bars

After a carcass has been scalded, its surface is sprayed with a jet of high pressure water from a supply at a pressure between 10 and 30 bars. Pref. a number of jets are employed simultaneously to speed up the task of treating the whole surface of the carcass. The carcass is pref. suspended by its rear feet from an overhead convey which advances the carcass through the spray zone. Water draining from the sprayed carcass is pref. collected and filtered to remove entrained hairs so that the water can be recycled. By using very hot water for the jets, the carcass can be scalded and depilated simultaneously. It is useful to provide clamps to steady the carcass while it is being sprayed. Spray jet nozzles are pref. set at a pitch of 10 to 50 cm in a sparge pipe which may be fixed or movable. The hairs are effectively removed without harming the hide in any way. The complete carcass can be treated rapidly with the same sprays. Any shape of animal can be treated.
