PROCESS FOR PRODUCING MESOCARBON MICROBEADS OF UNIFORM PARTICLE-SIZE DISTRIBUTION

ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREMesocarbon microbeads of narrow particle-sizedistribution are produced by: subjecting a heavy oilto a primary heat treatment at a temperature T1 toprepare a pitch containing mesophase microspheres;once cooling this pitch to a temperature lower thanits softening point; thereafter subjecting the pitchto a secondary heat treatment at a temperature T2,which is higher than 350°C and lower than (T1-40°C);cooling the pitch at a cool rate lower than 200°C/hour;separating from the pitch mesophase microsphereswhich precipitated in the secondary heat-treatmentstep; and thereafter obtaining by solvent extractionmesophase microspheres of substantially uniformparticle size formed in the residual pitch. Themesocarbon beads of narrow particle-size distributionthus obtained are particularly suitable for use aschromatograph packing material, catalyst support, andother uses.
