ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA precision molded electrical dischargemachining (EDM) electrode pertaining to the field ofpowder metallurgy. The electrode is made by shaping apreform from granules of carbon and granules of arefractory material selected from the group consisting oftungsten, molybdenum, carbides thereof, and stoichiometricand hyperstoichiometric carbides of the other elements ofthe groups IVB, VB, and VIB of the Periodic Table of theElements, the carbon and refractory granules being inter-connected in the form of a skeleton at their contiguouspoints of contact, and infiltrating the preform withcopper, silver, or alloys containing those metals.Despite the inability of most infiltrants to wet carbon,infiltration of the preform at ambient pressure is carriedout by selecting the amount and surface area of carbon andrefractory granules used in the preform according to aprescribed relationship.
