The device comprises a measuring instrument (4) with light transmitter (53, 54), light receiver (55) and rotatable planar mirror (51), an interface device (44) for converting the data, a computer (45) with data display and a printer (46). The measuring instrument (4) is rotated step by step, preferably in steps of at least 1 DEG , about the optical axis of the light transmitter and in each position the mirror is swivelled in order to direct the beam (60) reflected from the wall to the light receiver. At the time of reception of a particular beam position, the angle alpha between the angle of incidence and angle of exit at the mirror (51) is determined and the distance d between light receiver (55) and reflecting wall is calculated from the distance b between light receiver and mirror (51) and the angle by means of the formula d = b.tg alpha . The device is used for recording the cross-sectional profiles of cavity constructions. Due to the possibility of using white light, the measuring instrument is handy and the measuring sequence can be automated by interconnection with a computer. IMAGE
