To increase the durability of gear-shaped or rack-shaped tools for shaving gears, the walls of the grooves made in the tooth flanks or of the slots running from one flank of a tooth to the adjacent flank are provided with an anti-wear coating. Thus the cutting edges formed by the walls at the exit of the grooves or the slots from the teeth together with the flank parts located in between are strengthened. The flank parts themselves are to have no protective coating.
