The device controls the tape tension of the apparatus operating at normal speed and at high speed. The capstans of the apparatus can be driven by means of an intermediate gear part pivotally mounted about a spindle of a drive motor and a pivotally mounted brake lever acts on both the capstans. The drive motor is in this case mounted centrally with respect to the two capstans on a swing frame. It is possible by means of the engagement of the swing frame with the two brake levers to control the tension of the magnetic tape as a function of the direction of rotation and the torque of the drive motor.
