A flocculating agent based on Al sulphate or ferric chloro-sulphate is improved by incorporating orthophosphoric acid or alkaline orthophosphates such that the molar ratio of Fe or Al to P is greater than 1.5, pref. 2-10. For treating and purifying industrial waste waters. Flocculation takes place rapidly in large sizes thus improving decantation. Turbidity and colour of the colour after treatment are both reduced. The water has a low residual content of Fe and Al. Volume of the decanted sludge is reduced.
