Purifying waste water, for water treatment or for dewatering sludge using flocculating agents with subsequent sepn. of impurities, comprises adding (I) Al chloride, polyaluminium chloride, polyaluminium sulphate or polyaluminium chloride sulphate or a mixt. of these and (II) an aluminate are added to the waste water, water or sludge. Pref. (I) is polyaluminium chloride or polyaluminium chloridesulphate and (II) is Na aluminate. Pref. (I) and (II) are added successively with the acid component (I) being added before the alkaline component (II). The addn. of the flocculating agent may be made in 2 or 3 stages in a cascade type process, with part of (I) and part of (II) being added at each stage. USE/ADVANTAGE - The combination of (I) and (II) is esp. useful for treatment of waste waters, esp. heavily contaminated industrial waste waters from the chemical, textile, paper, cosmetics, and food industries, and for water treatment for the process industries and for dewatering clarifier sludges. The process is esp. useful for treating waste waters contg. oils, fats, waxes, surfactants, emulsions, emulsifiers, solvents chemical residues, polymerisation residues, resins, etc
