The device stops or propels a wagon on a railway. It is a small powered braked bogie (30), which is attached to the wagon (1) by a connecting arm (8) and placed on one rail (2). It can be detached and loaded on the wagon. The bogie has a grip (15), the jaws of which can grip the rail and hold it by rollers (21a,22a) on vertical spindles. At least one of the rollers is connected to an engine (24) and brake to drive or lock the roller. The rollers press on the rail web sides.
