Catalytic co-oxidative systems can be used for the chemical ignition of oil wells. At first combustible materials are fed into the crude oil contg. system, if it does not contain sufficient amts. of such materials. Subsequently a mixt. of a vegetable oil with an iodine number greater than 120 and 5-15 wt%, pref. 9-11 wt% based on the vegetable oil of an oxidation catalyst is added, followed by a mixt. of aldehyde or aldehyde type substances with 3-15 wt% oxidation catalyst in a nitrogen stream. Finally an oxygen contg. gas, pref. air is pressed into the system. - The oil component is pref. linseed oil. Aldehydes with 4-12 carbons can be used, pref. butyraldehyde or caproaldehyde. Useful oxidation catalysts are organic or inorganic c:ds. of variable valency metals, pref. manganese-perborate, iron-carbonyl, cobalt-octoate or cobalt-naphthenate.
