A method for the manufacture of optical fibres based upon quartz glass doped with germanium by reacting a gas which is oxidisable to silicon dioxide with oxygen or gases capable of releasing oxygen under the reaction conditions, in the presence of germanium tetrachloride, characterised in that silicon chlorides of the formula Sin Cl2n+2 , wherein n is 2-6, are employed as the gas which can be oxidised to silicon dioxide.
