5-aminosalicylic acid-O-sulfates of physiologically acceptable bases are new substances which can be prepared by esterifying 5-nitrosalicylic acid alkyl esters with carbodiimide and sulfuric acid, saponifying the alkyl ester group in an alkaline manner and reducing the 5-nitrosalicylic acid O-sulfates thus obtained. These substances can be used as medicines, particularly for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, enteritis regionalis Crohn (Crohn's disease), chronic non-specific colitis and diverticulitis.
