In this process, battery scrap containing zinc and manganese oxides is heated together with carbonaceous material. In order to permit an economical and practicable separation of the ingredients of spent zinc/carbon/manganese oxide dry cells from one another and recovery of the metal content in the form of metals or alloys which are as pure as possible and can be directly utilised further, the scrap - if necessary after previous leaching - is fused with solid carbonaceous reducing agents and iron carriers as additives in a reduction vessel, the zinc compounds and/or metallic zinc and, if appropriate, ammonium chloride which are contained in the reaction gases thus formed are collected when the gases are cooled, and manganese is recovered as zinc-free ferromanganese.
