The compression space is reduced in comparison to known engines and the closing of the intake valve is somewhat retarded to the same extent. The compression ratio remains unchanged. By means of this measure the mean working pressure is reduced and there is a reduction in power, but the "power:fuel consumption" ratio is more favourable than hitherto, which is precisely the aim of the invention. In the novel design, the ignition timing is somewhat retarded so that ignition occurs somewhat later than in known engines. This results in addition in a lighter engine construction.
