ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREThe invention is an improved wrapper construction forsmoking articles such as cigarettes resulting in a reducedtendency to ignite combustible materials accidentally orcarelessly coming into contact with the lit cigarette. Thewrapper constructions and smoking articles of the inventionhave a specially designed structure which causes a cigaretteto go out quickly when in contact with a substrate, includingmany commonly-encountered substrates made of combustiblematerials. This structure is characterized by a Burn ModeIndex ("BMI") as defined for the wrapper of between about 1.5cm-1 and 5.0 cm-1 for a single wrap embodiment. For analternative double wrapped embodiment, the outer wrap willhave a BMI in the range of from about 2.0 cm-1 to about 40cm-1 depending on the BMI of the inner wrap which may varybetween about 0.1 cm-1 to 4.0 cm-1. The preferred amount ofburn promoter is at least about 15 mg anhydrous potassiumcitrate per gram of bone dry paper or stoichiometricallyequivalent amounts of other burn promoting salts.Preferred substrate embodiments include paper made fromflax or other cellulosic fibers, treated with elevatedamounts of an alkali metal burn promoter such as alkali metalsalts of carboxylic acids, especially potassium salts. Incontrast to other attempts, these results are obtainedwithout a significant sacrifice of desired taste and smokedeliveries, for example, without unacceptable increases inpuff count or significant increases in delivered tar andcarbon monoxide. Wrapper constructions and smoking articlesof this invention may be manufactured using conventionalcigarette paper processes and equipment.
