The parent patent describes a multi-stage diffusion process and plant installation for the extraction of sugar from cane bagasse. A suspension of bagasse in juice is deaerated, agitated in closed circuit and passed through a separator to drain off the juice. The drained bagasse is cycled forward to the next diffusion stage to be taken into suspension once more, juice from the next stage sepn. is cycled back to take into suspension the drained bagasse from the first stage; this counter-current cycling of bagasse and juice is repeated through all stages. In this addn., in each diffusion stage, drained bagasse from the separator is subjected to a pressing operation to extract more juice. In each stage, juice from the separator is used to make up the bagasse suspension in that same stage while juice from the pressing operation is mixed into the bagasse suspension being made up in the preceding stage. The pressing operation pref. comprises a low pressure stage using a perforated or ribbed roller spring-loaded against a plain cylinder roll, and a high pressure stage using a three-roll machine like a cane mill.
