Percutaneous gel contg. di:hydro:testosterone - for treating deficient secretion of testicular androgen

Compsn. for treating inadequate secretion of androgens by the testicles is a gel for percutaneous application contg. dihydrotestosterone (I) as active ingredient. Pref. the gel is formulated with an aq. alcohol solvent and contains 2.5% (I). Percutaneous application avoids problems of liver toxicity and excessive fluctuations in plasma hormone levels. (I) is not converted in vivo to testosterone (II) or oestradiol and has no effect on FSM secretion. The compsn. can be used to treat general, localised, permanent or transient androgen deficiency and also has an antidepressant and libido-enhancing effect. It may also be useful (because of its anti-aestrogen effects) for treating oestrogen-dependent, idiopathic gynaecomastia (by direct application to the breasts).
