Fire-extinguishing material capable of being employed especially as coating mortar extinguishing sodium fires. This material comprises from 80 to 76 % by weight of granulates of inorganic compounds, from 14 to 13 % by weight of hydraulic binder, from 4.5 to 4 % by weight of bound water and from 1.5 to 6.5 % by weight of a graphite insertion compound consisting, for example, of a complex of graphite and sulphuric acid containing 8 % by weight of sulphuric acid. When this material is heated to a temperature of at least approximately 180 DEG C, it releases the graphite insertion compound in the form of a foam which extinguishes the fire.
