The combination i.c. engine consists of cylinders in gps. of three, connected to a crankshaft and set e.g. in a horizontally-opposed or V-configuration. Each gp. of cylinders has two (1,2 and 5,6) operating in a four-stroke cycle and one (3,4) operating in a two-stroke cycle on the exhaust gases from the four-stroke cylinders. - The feed, transfer and exhaust of gases is carried out by cylindrical rotors, driven from the engine crankshaft by gears, chains or belts, and equipped with offset ports which correspond to the cylinder strokes. The use of the two-stroke cylinders to utilise the exhaust gases reduces the need for silencing equipment. ADVANTAGE - Reduced exhaust gas toxicity and noise.(3/5)
