The heat exchanger is intended for heating rooms or other spaces using a heating appliance such as a coal, wood or gas-fired stove or central heating boiler etc. It comprises a housing (1) with inlet (2) and outlet (3) for combustion gas and containing a series of tubes (6), and with inlet (8) and outlet (9) for air which is passed through the housing (chamber 7 traversed by the combustion gas tubes 6 as shown; or through the tubes if gas passes through the chamber) by a fan (10) of which operation is preferably controlled by a thermostat (11). The thermostat is preferably arranged near the tubes (6) in the air space on the cold air inlet (8) side.
