A porous glass separation medium for high performance liquid chromatography (HLC) which comprises a porous particulate sodium borosilicate of SiO2-B2O3-Na2O having a mean diameter of 0.1 to 30 µm. The porous particulate sodium borosilicate can be treated with a silane coupling agent and/or can have ion exchange groups on the surface. The medium can be prepared by phase-separating a sodium borosilicate of Si02-B203-Na20 by heat treatment and removing at least a portion of an acid-dissoluble phase to obtain porous glass particles and subjecting the obtained glass particles to pulverization and classification.
