The invention relates to a device for the metallurgical aftertreatment of premelted metals, in particular steel, consisting of a cylindrical pan, which is sealed with a lid, and one or more electrodes penetrating the lid for heating the melt by means of an arc. The electrodes (51, 52, 53) consist of metal strands, preferably of continuous casting billets, which have a composition corresponding to the analysis of the metal melt. The invention further relates to a method for the aftertreatment of steel melts with the lowest carbon contents or with narrow carbon tolerances, in which electrodes made from low-carbon, continuously cast steel billets are used to heat the steel melt via arcs.
