The steel powder compacts exhibited an unusual combination of strength and ductility in every state of heat-treatment which was employed, The numerical values of the tensile properties were lower than those obtained from wought material of similar composition but considerably higher than anay which have previously been obtained for powder compacts. The hardness of the heat-treated powder compacts tempered after quenching was lower than that of the corresponding wrought bars. The resistance of the powder compacts to impact (as measured by tests on snall un-notched bars) was lower than that of wrought bars of corresponding size but higher than that which would normally be expected of powder material of such high strength characteristics. The elastic modulus of the steel powder compacts was approximately the same (30,000,000 p.s.i.) as that of wrought steel bars, This is regarded as being unusual for powder metal material.
