Samples of river water are placed in two containers (1, 2) of equal size. The containers are open to the ambient weather conditions at the measuring location. The walls (5, 6) of the containers are made of efficient thermal-insulating material. Both vessels have paddles (7, 8) for thorough mixing of the samples of river water (9, 10). One container also has a heater (11). A pair of series-connected thermo-couples (12, 13) measure the temp. difference between the two liq. samples. Heat is applied to one sample (9) for a short time interval and the temp. difference between the two samples is monitored.
