The invention relates to an appliance for determining physicochemical characteristics of metal melts, especially of steel melts, which has a measuring head which can be plugged into a support tube, consists of a ceramic material, and in whose front an electrochemical cell, a contact electrode, and a thermoelement are provided as sensors, which are covered by a protective cap. In order to provide an appliance which makes it possible to improve by simple means the measuring accuracy of physicochemical characteristics of a metal melt or an iron or steel melt, it is proposed that, for the purpose of determining oxygen in steel melts, especially in steel melts in converters during steel production, the sensors (5, 6, 7), i.e. the electrochemical cell (5), the contact electrode (6) and the thermoelement (7) be arranged within a measuring chamber (K) which is formed by an annular element (3'), which in the axial direction projects beyond said sensors, on the measuring head (3), and the measuring chamber (K) be provided with venting ducts (8) which are situated in the measuring head (3) and open in the end face (4).
