ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSUREA method of producing coal or coal mixtures of afine granular size, especially coal dust, which is safeto store and particularly to transport by road, rail, andsea. The coal comprises up to 10 % volatile constituents,or the coal mixtures comprise one or more components whichmake up up to 50 % of the weight of the mixture and com-prise up to 15 % volatile constituents, and a residualcomponent or components having up to 10 % volatile con-stituents. The coal or coal mixtures are subjected to athermal treatment for from 30 seconds to 1 hour at atemperature of between lOO°C and below the ignitiontemperature of the coal or the coal mixture, or areheated for from 5 to 30 seconds at a temperature abovethe ignition temperature of the coal or of the mixtureto a temperature which is below the ignition temperature.
