The invention relates to a method of producing coal and coal mixtures of small particle size, preferably coal dust, which are suitable for storage and in particular for road, railway and ocean transportation. Its object is to provide a method of producing said coal or coal mixtures, the storage and transportation of which satisfies the necessary safety regulations but does not require high expenditure during the storage and transportation. For this purpose, the coal has up to 10% volatile components or the coal mixture consists of one or more mixture components which constitute up to 50% of the weight of the mixture and have up to 15% volatile components, and of a residual component or components with up to 10% volatile components. The coal or coal mixture is subjected to a heat treatment for 30 seconds to 1 hour at a temperature between 100 DEG C and below the ignition temperature of the coal or mixture, or is heated for 5 to 30 seconds at a temperature above the ignition temperature of the coal or mixture up to a temperature below the ignition temperature.
