Selective absorbtion of sulfur dioxide from gases containing sulfur dioxide and carbon dioxide

Sulfur dioxide is selectively removed and recovered from a gas stream containing the same by contacting the gas with an aqueous solution of a piperazinone or a morpholinone as absorbent. The rich absorbent is thermally regenerated to release the sulfur dioxide for reuse in the contacting step.
