The invention has as an object the production of alcohols by hydrogenolysis of carboxylic acid esters, under hydrogen pressure, in the presence of a catalyst resulting from the incorporation of at least one compound of at least one metal from the group consisting of germanium, tin and lead to Raney nickel or to a nickel-containing carrier. The reaction is preferably conducted at a temperature from 180 DEG to 330 DEG C. and under a pressure from 1 to 10 MPa.
