The invention relates to a method for the precision cylindrical grinding of shafts made of hard materials, in particular steel. Known methods require a very long grinding time, the peak-to-valley height finally obtained no longer being within a preset limit value. The invention shortens the grinding time while at the same time improving the peak-to-valley height by a method in which a shaft surface is exposed, along a grinding line, to the action of a plane end of a grinding tool driven in rotation at high speed, the axis of rotation of which is set perpendicularly to the axis of the shaft. Advantageously, an interruption of the grinding line is achieved by a grinding tool which is centrally recessed in the manner of a cup-grinding wheel and is also composed of a fine-porous carrier material which receives a polish-grinding paste. The grinding speed of approximately 15 m/s is realised by a high-speed drive at 27000 rpm.
