The subject of the invention is methods and devices for automatically identifying handwritten words and machines for post-marking cheques or letters. A machine according to the invention for post-marking cheques comprises means 1 for moving the cheques 2 in front of a read head 17, which comprises an optical bandpass filter 3, a lens 4, light sources 6 and an optical detector 5 comprising at least one row of photoelectric elements perpendicular to the direction F of movement of the cheques. The machine further comprises a central unit 7 with a microprocessor and a memory in which are recorded all the words which may occur in the written inscription of the total of the cheque with the combination of characteristics of mean length and of position of the up and down strokes which characterise this word. The machine further comprises a printer 8 which is controlled by the central unit 7 and which prints, on the cheque, the total in figures in a code which can be read by an automatic sorting machine.
