PURPOSE:To reduce the diffusion of the separated component in a mobile phase and to enhance fluid pressure, by sending the mobile phase to a drain without allowing the same to flow in a reference liquid cell by the changeover from a specimen cell to a rotary valve. CONSTITUTION:A rotary valve 4 is selectively changed over to send a mobile phase to a drain D from a specimen cell 1 without allowing the same to flow in a reference liquid cell 2. Before analysis is started, the mobile phase is allowed to flow in the reference liquid cell 2 from a column F through the specimen cell 1 and a branch pipe 3 to fill the same with a new mobile phase liquid and allowed to flow out from the drain D through the rotary valve 4. Next, a specimen is injected in the column F to separate each component. Then, the difference between the refractive index of the specimen cell 1 and that of the reference liquid cell 2 to form a chromatogram. The mobile phase is allowed to flow out from the drain D through the rotary valve 4 without being passed through the reference liquid cell 2. Since the flow passage of the specimen cell and that of the reference liquid cell are selectively changed over by the rotary valve, the separated component can be portionwise taken out at high purity.
