PURPOSE:To identify symmetry by extracting a center line of a symmerical axis candidate, setting a half straight line vertical to the center line from an end point and deciding whether a difference between a distance from the end point to the center line and a distance from the end point up to an intersecting point between the center line and the half straight line is more than a threshold level or not. CONSTITUTION:In a pattern recognizing device 1, a pattern is binarized by a reading processing part 11 and stored in an image data storing part 12. A vector processing part 13 executes broken line approximation based on the stored image data, converts the image data into vector data and inputs the vector data to a vector data sorting processing part 14. The processing part 14 sorts the inputted codes and characters into segments and outputs code, segments and characters respectively to code, segment and character recognizing processing parts 15-17. These processing parts 15-17 add attributes based upon identified and sorted results to the codes, segments and characters and store the processed results in a recognized results storing parts 18. A symmetry candidate segment extracting means 2 extracts a center line capable of forming symmetry from the storage part 18 and checks whether a shape line or the like to intersect with the center line exists or not and symmetry is identified by a vertical segment setting means 3 and a computing means 4.
