PURPOSE:To retrieve a position signal quickly and correctly by writing the users bit special information of time code signal over the prescribed frame of a magnetic tape special position to be retrieved and when the special information is detected, stopping a magnetic tape. CONSTITUTION:When a special position P1 of a magnetic tape in which special information 6 is recorded, is retrieved the magnetic tape is travelled at a high speed, the users bit of a time code signal 4 is read and 'ABCDEFOn' written as the special information 6 is detected N times, the magnetic tape is rewound for a prescribed quantity only, the travelling direction of the magnetic tape is changed over again, the users bit of the time code signal 4 is read at the speed lower than the high speed travelling again, when the 'ABCDEFOn' is detected, for example, 14 times, it is concluded to be the special information 6, and when the 'ABCDEFOn' of 15 times is detected, the travelling of the magnetic tape is stopped. Thus, it is not necessary that a users bit UB only of a time code signal 2 records the special information to show the retrieving position and a time signal, etc., are rewritten to the special information.
