PURPOSE:To disperse uniformly and highly a catalytic metal and to enhance the porosity of the catalyst by mixing zirconium alkoxide and a catalytic metallic salt in a soln. of a polar compd. having multidentate or cross-linking ligand formability to obtain a homogeneous soln., and hydrolyzing the soln. CONSTITUTION:Zirconium alkoxide and a catalytic metallic salt are dissolved in a polar compd. such as amino alcohol and ethanolamine. The molar ratio of the zirconium alkoxide to the polar compd. is regulated to 1/1-15, and the mixed soln. is hydrolyzed at 10-80 deg.C. The gelatinous or agar-like gel formed by the hydrolysis is crushed in appropriate size, and dried under reduced pres sure for 6-30hr at 80-110 deg.C at which the combined polar compd. contained in the gel is not substantially volatilized. After drying, the polar compd. remaining in the gel is scattered by heat treatment to complete a porous and highly dispersed catalyst using zirconia as a carrier.
