Transformation of Cucumis sp. plants with A. rhizogenes followed by regeneration into genetically altered plants. Inverted bypocotyls of C. sativus L., cv, Straight Eight were inoculated with A. rhizogenes containing the vector pARC8 or pARC16 containing NOS/NPT chimeric marker gene conferring resistance to kanamycin in addition to the resident Ri plasmid. Roots produced as the inoculated hypocotyls were excised and sequentially regenerated in CTM-2, -3 and -4 media resulting in mature, fruting transgenic plants having germinable seed. Short intermodal morphology was expressed yielding Cucumber plants, called ''PCRI Hi Density'', having greater yield per acre.
