Aqs. rooting gel comprises a thixotropic gel of hectorite in water contg. at leat 60 ppm calcium ions. Also claimed is a transparent container including the above gel. Pref. the compsn. comprises not more than 200 ppm (esp. 60-130) ppm calcium ions and a synthetic hectorite esp. comprising (by wt. pts.) SiO2(58-63), MgO (25-30), Na2O (2.2-2.8), Li2O (0.65-0.9) and sulphate (0.15-0.4) in an amt. of 10% wt./vol.
