New xanthone derivs. having diuretic activity - are 9-oxo-9H-xanthenyl:oxy-acetic acid or -ethanol cpds. or 1,2-di:hydro-6-oxo 6H-furo (2,3,c)xanthene derivs.
Xanthene derivs. of formula (I), and their non-toxic salts when B=COOH, are new. W, X, Y and Z=H, halo or 1-4C alkyl; A=H, or A=X or A=Y=CH2; B=CH2OH, 2-5C alkoxycarbonyl or COOH; provided that W is not H or 7-Me when X=Y=Z=A=H and B=COOH or alkoxycarbonyl. Cpds. (I) may be prepd. by reacting cpds. of formula (II) with L-CH2B (II) (L=halo, OH or acyloxy). Prods. where B=alkoxycarbonyl can be hydrolysed to give prods where B=COOH. Reaction is pref. in presence of base in an inert solvent at 0-150 deg.C.
