The method involves moving a protective assembly (10) (20) progressively through the soil (D), the said assembly forming an advancing working space (30) in the soil, from which space the construction elements can be successively installed. This has the effect of providing a free tunnel-like working and transporting space (30) on the side of the protective assembly at the rear in the direction of advancement (A), which space extends transversely to the direction of advancement essentially over the entire longitudinal extent of the said assembly and at least one end thereof is always accessible. An apparatus for carrying out this method comprises a plurality of front and rear walking support units (10, 20), which are in each case arranged one behind the other in the direction of advancement (A) and in the rear area of the said units the tunnel-like working and transporting space (30) is formed, running transversely to the direction of advancement and leaving a floor section (C) running essentially over the entire width of the walking support units (10, 20) free for the installation of the construction elements.
