Expanded metal packing for fluid contact devices and method of forming same

An expanded metal random packing (26) for use in gas-liquid or liquid-liquid contact devices comprises a longitudinal strip (10) (see Fig. 1) of expanded metal having a plurality of generally uniformly disposed and defined spaces (20) defined by a plurality of struts (12), the strip having a one (22) and an other (24) end (16), the ends (22, 24) of said longitudinal strip (10) being disposed inwardly about a vertical axis shown in broken line to form a partial or fully enclosed body of expanded metal the body constituting the random packing.
