Substantially pure cultures of ATCC 53522 and mutants thereof are effective for protecting plants against dehydration and rot of roots that can be determined by a defined analysis of plant protection. The invention further comprises a protecting toxin produced by the bacteria aforementioned above. Inoculating a seed preparation comprises an effective amount of the bacterium or toxin in a carrier. A method of protecting plants against dehydration and rot roots involves placing an effective amount of the bacterium or toxin in the immediate vicinity of a plant to be protected.
