The rate of fire of a firearm actuated by gas pressure is controlled by a lock (9). The firearm has a gas piston (5) which operates in a cylinder (4) and is driven by gas pressure. This piston releases the next shot when the weapon is used for repeated firing. The movement of the piston is locked by a spring-loaded lever which is held in the locking position by a small piston (7) mounted in a bore (3) which communicates with the weapon barrel (1). The lever remains in the locking position until the gas pressure in the barrel falls to a predetermined level.
