Several electrodes are provided on each side of the impeller and its blades, the control and adjusting units being on the left. The fluid is contained in a tank, shaped as a semicircle in section, with a supporting frame. The electrodes are closely shaped according to the blade surfaces with which they interact and are themselves immersed in the fluid They are accurately positioned w.r.t. the surface being treated. An electric current is passed through the electrodes and through the dielectric fluid, but causing sparking along the surface of the vane being treated and eroding this according to the shape of the electrode and the desired shape of blade.
