The method proposed is intended to ensure vibration-free gear changing in transmissions with hydraulically actuated friction clutches, in which a first clutch of a first gear stage remains unpressurised or is depressurised and a second clutch of a second gear stage, which is to be coupled to a shaft, is subjected to pressure. During the process of clutching the second gear stage, the first clutch is initially subjected to a slight pressure and is only depressurised again when the friction elements of the second clutch are pressed together or when the shaft has achieved a certain speed of rotation. A clutch device suitable for this purpose has, in addition to the known pressure pistons for pressing together the friction elements, auxiliary and control pistons, of which the latter come into effect under the influence of centrifugal force.
