A method for no-load cutoff of a hammer drill and/or chisel hammer in the drive train to the tool (24) is proposed, in which a clutch (28), which is arranged at least in the percussive-drive train, is automatically disengaged as a function of the reaching of the no-load position. The reaching of a path position, situated on the no-load stretch, of the tool (24) is recorded and upon reaching this path position the clutch (28) is automatically disengaged and upon leaving this path position the clutch (28) is automatically re-engaged. This takes place via a no-load sensor (30) which causes the engagement and disengagement of the clutch (28) electromechanically via a control device (34). The person working with the hammer drill in the hand does not therefore have to apply any additional operating or engagement forces to switch the percussive mechanism on and off.
