An apparatus for processing and comminuting clays or similar raw materials for the production of ceramics is proposed, by means of the use of which apparatus an optimum comminution of minerals of high hardness grades is also ensured. It has a pair of rollers 6, 7 which is mounted in a frame such that the rollers can be rotationally driven counter to each other and has an at least approximately horizontal axis plane or is provided with a vertically extending passage gap. This passage gap of the roller pair 8 can be adjusted or varied within a distance region limited between 0.2 mm and 0.8 mm, and both rollers 6 and 7 of the roller pair are provided with a casing of hard material which is smooth on the outside.
